O, Roma nobilis, orbis terrarum mater!
I got involved w/ classics through mythology, then Latin, and finally Greek. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with this passion but I kept at it and then the pieces fell into place by getting involved more in the material culture, through travel and study in Rome. I realized that I needed a PhD and I needed to spend as much time abroad as possible. The end all result of a long period of gestation (on what to do in Italy, how to make a contribution to the field) was the creation of the American Institute for Roman Culture, which I co-founded an have been CEO of for almost 10 years. My problem now is that the academic pursuits and publications are way behind as a result of running an organization, which has many activities. Thankfully, we've got excellent people involved and active colleagues from many fine institutions, so we're always more focused and successful in our goals. Best, DA
